Workplace Relations Manager


Location: Burwood, Victoria
Job Type: 3 month temporary/full time hours

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Workplace Relations Manager to join our team and lead workplace relations initiatives within a highly unionized, public-sector environment.

About the Role:

As the Workplace Relations Manager, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing strategies that support effective employee relations, industrial relations, and compliance with employment frameworks. This position requires a deep understanding of public-sector employment practices, particularly in VPS (Victorian Public Sector) or APS (Australian Public Service) settings, and experience managing relationships in unionized workplaces.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage workplace relations strategies, policies, and practices.
  • Provide expert advice on industrial relations matters, including enterprise agreements, disputes, and negotiations.
  • Foster productive relationships with unions, ensuring constructive dialogue and effective resolution of workplace issues.
  • Oversee compliance with VPS/APS frameworks, relevant legislation, and industrial instruments.
  • Support the development and implementation of workforce strategies that align with organizational goals.
  • Manage complex workplace investigations and grievances.
  • Develop and deliver training for managers and staff on workplace relations and employment law.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including HR, legal, and executive teams, to drive positive workplace outcomes.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in workplace relations within VPS, APS, or similar public-sector environments.
  • A deep understanding of industrial relations laws, enterprise agreements, and union engagement in heavily unionized workplaces.
  • Strong negotiation and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain productive relationships with unions and other stakeholders.
  • Expertise in handling complex employment matters, including disputes, grievances, and investigations.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • A degree in Human Resources, Law, Industrial Relations, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
