WA works on LGBTQIA+ strategy
The WA Government has convened the inaugural meeting of the LGBTQIA+ Inclusion Strategy Reference Group.
The initiative aims to develop the first whole-of-government strategy to enhance the wellbeing and social participation of LGBTQIA+ communities.
The Reference Group, comprising representatives from a diverse range of LGBTQIA+ organisations and the Department of Communities, met for the first time this week.
Members include Albany Pride, Equal Voices, GLBTI Rights in Ageing Inc (GRAI), Kimberley Blak Pride, Living Proud, Pride WA, Rainbow Futures WA, TransFolk of WA, Youth Pride Network, and Dr Lukasz Krzyzowski.
The Cook Government has committed $900,000 over two years to support the development of this strategy, which is spearheaded by the Minister for Youth and the Department of Communities.
The strategy aims to promote wellbeing and enable full social and economic participation for LGBTQIA+ individuals by identifying key priority areas and implementing targeted actions.
“Equality and freedom from discrimination and violence are fundamental human rights, but LGBTQIA+ people face significantly higher levels of discrimination and social exclusion,” said Youth Minister Hannah Beazley.
“The Cook Government is committed to creating equal opportunities for all Western Australians, and this Strategy will help support and strengthen our LGBTQIA+ community.”
The strategy will foster a coordinated approach through partnerships with the Departments of Communities, Education, Health, and the Mental Health Commission.
The Reference Group, in collaboration with the Department of Communities, is meant to ensure broad consultation, providing numerous opportunities for individuals and organisations to contribute to the development of the strategy.
