Unfair dismissals cases increasing
Information released by Fair Work Australia shows that unfair dismissal claims have nearly doubled since 2008-09, the last year of operation of the Work Choices system.
Nearly 8000 dismissal claims were lodged in the first six months of 2011-12 with Fair Work Australia, a rise of 11 per cent on the same period for 2010-11.
Of 3505 unfair dismissals applications considered in the second quarter of 2011-12, 3102 were settled without a decision being made. In 51 cases, the dismissal was found to be fair, while 27 were found to be unfair. In two cases, the dismissal was found to be a case of genuine redundancy.
