Police pursued over union move
Courts have heard that the former secretary of the Victoria Police union was the victim of a campaign to have him sacked.
Melbourne’s Supreme Court has been told that Paul Mullett, the former secretary of the Police Association, was charged with crimes that were never fully investigated.
Mr Mullett claims he was wrongly suspended from Victoria Police in 2007 before being he was charged with perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
He alleges that it was a malicious prosecution against him, and is suing the former chief commissioner of Victoria Police, Christine Nixon, and two other officers.
Mr Mullett says the charges were not properly investigated and would not have been successfully prosecuted.
Mullett’s barrister, Andrew Panna QC, said his client was never even questioned.
He said Ms Nixon wanted Mr Mullett removed as secretary, and so allegedly cooked up the charges which were ultimately dropped.
Mr Mullett said his career was ruined by that time.
The hearings continue.
