Mayor marred by raft of accusations
Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi is continuing to defy criticism over her treatment of gifts and travel arrangements.
The WA Department of Local Government has released a report from its inquiry into Ms Scaffidi’s time as Lord Mayor.
The report makes 45 allegations against Ms Scaffidi for breaches of the Local Government Act.
The investigators found the Lord Mayor had failed to disclose gifts and contributions related to more than 35 trips taken between 2008 and 2014.
They allege she failed to declare gifts and contributions including a trip with her husband to the Beijing Olympics, paid for by BHP Billiton.
The department staff conducting the inquiry invited Ms Scaffidi to attend a voluntary interview, but she declined the invitation.
She then made submissions to the inquiry after reading a draft report, but the investigators ruled them to be relevant.
“The submissions did not (other than in respect of a single finding) challenge the factual basis on which the findings in the draft report were made,” the report said.
“Instead, they were primarily directed towards the contention that it was not in the public interest for any disciplinary action to be taken against Mayor Scaffidi.”
While the Lord Myaor appears determined to keep fighting, experts say her reputation may not last the distance.
“When I say to people; 'Bronwyn Bishop', what's the first thing they think? The helicopter,” says Dr Julie Crews, a lecturer in business ethics at Edith Cowan University.
“They don't think that she had a 20-year stellar career, and unfortunately the Mayor may risk not being remembered for all the good things that she's done,” she told the ABC.
Dr Crews says Scaffidi should step aside while the State Administrative Tribunal considers the 45 alleged breaches outlined in the report.
