Guilty plea on Ipswich grift
A former police officer has pleaded guilty to corruption and misconduct offences in dealings with the Ipswich City Council.
Fifty-nine-year-old Wayne Innes should be sentenced at a hearing in the Brisbane District Court next week over dealings with the council and with Racing Queensland.
Mr Innes - the former owner of Landfill Logistics - was charged after a wide-ranging Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) investigation into Ipswich council.
Mr Innes dealt with former Racing Queensland bureaucrat William Shuck to secure work on racecourses for his company, which prosecutors said amounted to “insider trading”.
Mr Shuck gave Mr Innes budgets for the work, allowing him to undercut competitors.
In regard to the council, the court heard Mr Innes gave kickbacks to senior figures.
At one point, he even offered 30 per cent of his profits to “grease the wheel” at the council.
Mr Innes was previously convicted of dishonesty offences in the 1990s.
The court heard his gambling problem meant he often made no profit from his business decisions.
He is expected to be sentenced on Monday.
