Councillor asked to keep backward views in check
Victoria's Local Government Minister has been called on to silence a range of anti-Islamic social media views espoused by a city councillor.
Latrobe city councillor Christine Sindt has refused to remove several anti-Muslim posts on her Facebook page linking Islam to terrorism.
Over the weekend, Cr Sindt attended the anti-immigration, pro-bigotry Reclaim Australia march in Melbourne.
She posted an image of herself at the holding a poster stating; “I love bacon, not paedophilia”.
In the background of the same picture, a woman holds an even more nonsensical sign reading; “I only sniff Australian petrol. Halal free does not support terrorisms.”
The councillor’s Facebook page lists her as a 'Public Figure', under the title ‘Cr Christine Sindt - Latrobe City’.
Cr Sindt’s colleague, Cr Kellie O'Callgahan, told the ABC that while Cr Sindt was entitled to her own opinions, they should not be put forth in Latrobe City's name.
“To then post that image on her Facebook page and to continually endorse other items within her own social media pages under the banner of her councillor title is inappropriate,” she said.
“It is outrageous and the Minister now needs to intervene and now do something about this immediately.”
